Causal Conjunctions in Chinese: 由于...所以/因此
In Chinese, the phrases 由于 (yóu yú) and 因此 (yīn cǐ) are used to express cause and effect relationships in sentences.
由于 translates to "due to" or "because of," and it introduces the cause or reason for an action or situation.
所以 means "therefore" or "so," and it introduces the result or consequence of the cause mentioned earlier.
For example, in the sentence "由于身体不好，所以爸爸打算提前退休" (Due to poor health, Dad plans to retire early), 由于 introduces the reason (poor health), while 所以 presents the result (planning to retire early).
Similarly, 因此 can be used interchangeably with 所以 to indicate a consequence. For instance, in "他工作很努力，因此取得了很大的成功" (He worked very hard; therefore, he achieved great success), 因此 serves the same purpose as 所以, linking hard work to the success achieved.
Both structures are essential for creating coherent and logical sentences in Chinese, allowing speakers to clearly articulate the relationship between causes and effects.
